 The most active volcano on Iceland was not characterized by many Icelanders during the middle ages as “the entrance to hell” for no reason. It’s just 45-minute drive from the Geysir Center. If you’re up for a challenge, you can take about an 8-hour hike up 1491 meters and have an impressively close look at this natural disaster.
Hekla erupted most recently in the year 2000. The eruptions reached a height up to 30 kilometers, and there was approximately 70 million m3 of lava and 200 million m3 of ash spewed over the area.
The past has shown that Hekla wakes up once every century to instill fear and terror into the residents of Iceland. |
