Less than two hours away by car, which in and of itself is worth the trip, you will come upon one of most favorite Icelandic destinations - Landmannalaugar.
Freely translated into English, this word means "Farmer-wash area". This location has only little to do with "washing" today. A bath in the hot springs not far from the information center and campground serves more the purpose of relaxation than hygiene.
The fascinating part about Landmannalaugar is without a doubt its picturesque natural landscape. Inevitably gazing at the mountains will force you to return to childhood - at least a bit. Only children speak of "yellow", "orange" or even "purple" mountains. These however are the appropriate terms to describe the colorful mountains at Landmannalaugar.
While wandering through this intoxication of color, you'll come upon Icelandic moss fields, meadows of wool grass, steam springs, and bizarre lava formations, where various blossoms defy the raw climate. Here you also find a rare orchid, which only exists in Iceland and in the Rocky Mountains. This all leaves lasting impressions.
If an hour or day outing is not enough, you can reach Thorsmörk from a Landmannalaugar. The way is signposted and there are possibilities to overnight in huts or on the campground. |
