At first glance, the little spot 25 km from the hotel doesn’t seem worth the trip. A few houses, green houses, horses, pasture, a church . . . yes a church! It is just this church that turns the little village into a real highlight.
In particular the windows of the church: colorful panes, through which the light falls letting the stone floor of this house of God shine in the most beautiful colors. These windows have the effect of a kaleidoscope making an otherwise sober layout unique. The space gives a different effect depending on which angle and with which intensity the sunlight breaks through the panes.
The church was constructed from 1956 to 1963. The costs were split among all of the Scandinavian nations, since Skálholt was the spiritual and cultural center of the Vikings in the Middle Ages. The first translation of the New Testament was printed here for instance.
During the Middle Ages in this seemingly peaceful place, there was a hanging of the catholic bishop Arasson and his two sons. There is a stone memorial of this event.
Today the bishop has his seat here in Skálholt. |
