Iceland is packed with geological wonders as well as historically noteworthy sites. Thingvellir National Park is of interest on both counts. Both aspects are strongly represented here.
The geological importance is obvious. This is the area where the
Eurasian and the American continental plates meet. Visitors can actually
stand on two different continents at a time. Well, that is, if the
definition of continents is stretched a bit.
The historical context of Thingvellir is just as fascinating. The ravine
hosted the oldest known parliament in 930 AD. Open-air governmental
meetings took place here. An inspiring thought when hiking through the
ravine.
And besides geology and history? Thingvellir is absolutely worth a
visit on the basis of its natural beauty alone, attractive for both
impassioned non-geologists and non-historians as well. |
